The Police
The job of the police is to build a case against you when they think you have broken the law, and they are good at it. It’s not their job to help you. Do not be naïve and think that you can work with the police without a lawyer. Too often in Thailand people in trouble prefer to trust their wife, girlfriend, their friends, their wife’s friend of a friend of a friend who knows someone who can help. Direct negotiations with the police without a lawyer subject you to information extraction techniques and methods that are unknown to you. It is the job of the police to extract information to use against you, it is very easy to unknowingly provide information that will cement their case against you.

The Court
The police and prosecutor have great power and resources to build and present a case against you that makes you look like a monster. All cases in Thailand start with an accusation. Police and prosecution build their cases to support the accusation. The judge is the only person in this process who is impartial. While the law may state that the government needs to prove that you committed the crime beyond a reasonable doubt, in reality it will feel as though you need to prove your innocence. Our job is to create a great deal of doubt directly relating to the main features of the crime for which you have been accused. This is a process that requires an enormous amount of preparation.
Think of a trial like an upcoming exam. If you don’t study you will surely fail. If you put the time in and study hard you will pass. The more time spent on study and preparation the better you will do.
